Dear manufacturers and stakeholders, TS members of the EC PEF pilot phase,
You, who are very involved in the EC PEF pilot phase, as we are (within the Yukan start-up that I lead), I invite you to take some time to read carefully this e-mail which represents an important initiative that personally addresses to you, during this delicate phase of “Remodeling”, which it is your responsibility to validate as a member of a technical secretariat. I draw your intention on the fact that this initiative is a free and independent initiative on the part of Yukan, which is a stakeholder (as others) of the PEF pilot phase, it is completely independent of the EC, the bodies of governance of the”PEF” pilot phase, and of any other stakeholders
The context of our initiative: Why the “Remodeling” phase is a decisive step
It is clear to many players that the EC PEF pilot phase, with the validation stage of the “Remodeling” process, has entered a crucial and decisive phase.
This phase is crucial for all members of the Technical Secretariats (TS), who, after almost 3 years of constructive work to develop their “PEFCR”, have now to face the issue of validation (within the fixed timing set by the EC), a new model formalizing the rules of their “PEFCR” and especially the introduction of new secondary data (provided by the EC), and new characterization factors. These new elements can potentially have a significant impact on the results and even on the conclusion of the first hot spots analysis (made after the screening phase), or even on some rules set in the PEFCR.
Despite the efforts done by the remodelers, nobody can deny that the first excel files provided are complex to analyze and exploit for manufacturers without a strong expertise in life cycle analysis. We understood that the remodelers have to provide results on the impact of the remodeling on the representative product, which is certainly interesting in itself, but no sufficient to evaluate the impacts of the remodeling exercise on real products. Such analysis limited on the representative product may mislead in one direction or another some manufacturers with atypical products. As the detailed explanation below will demonstrate to you, we believe that a complementary evaluation of the “Remodeling”, on scenarios that reflects your reality, on your real products (if your activity data are available) or on the products for which supporting studies have been done is important to give you all information’s needed for a relevant analysis and thus for this final validation step.
This phase of “Remodeling” is finally decisive, insofar as it takes place in the last straight line of this Pilot Phase, whose stake is in fact, the final validation of the “PEFCR’s” and therefore, the success or failure of the ambitious EC program: “Single Market for Green Products”, in its ability to demonstrate that PEFCRs can be operationally implemented by stakeholders.
In this context, we believe that many members of the TS, and in particular the manufacturers, will face some difficulties to give an informed opinion (in one way or another) on the validation of the “Remodeling” without having the ability to understand the potentially major effects of this critical step on their own products.
We are convinced that this complementary analysis on your real situation is key in order to create the conditions for the manufacturers to validate serenely the remodeling and in fact, ensure the success of the final validation of the PEFCR.
Why the validation of the “Remodeling” cannot be limited to analyzing the results on the representative product but requires testing it on a minimum of real products?
The analysis of the representative product to study the influences of the Remodeling on the results, is an important and necessary first step.
However, this step is not enough to help the manufacturer to understand the effects of the Remodeling (and to validate it). Indeed, the main risks of the analysis on this virtual (representative) product are that opposite effects offset each other and that effects on weakly represented processes in the representative product are hard to see (or a mix of these both effects).
This analysis could lead to conclusions that would be false (or partially true) for specific products (real products) from the manufacturers.
To illustrate these risks, let’s take a product category for which the representative product is mainly composed by one material (one type of existing products). The Wine Pilot illustrates this situation very well (of course, the same demonstration could be led on all pilots).
The representative product for still wine is a combination of the different existing packaging on the market. The table in the figure below is an extract of the wine PEFCR (V4) page 37/103. The weights are provided per 0.75 litres of packaged wine.
As shown by the table below, the glass container is the most widely used for the still wine on the market (more than 98% of the composition of the representative product).
Imagine now the situation presented in the following table that presents the impacts (illustrative single score) of the material A, B, C and D before and after the Remodeling step. (values are dummy values and NO CONCLUSION can be drawn on the comparison between packaging).
This simple example could conclude to a reduction of the environmental performance of the representative product by around 19,5% comparing the situations before Remodeling step.
However, if your product is only composed by material B, you won’t have the information that the environmental performance of your product has deteriorated by 20%.
This approach (and associated danger) can be applied to all products categories and to all life cycle stages.
So, to conclude on the influence of the remodelling, it’s important, beside the influence on the representative product, to evaluate the influence directly on your real products or on scenarios that reflects your reality and to perform a detailed analysis per life cycle stages.
The Yukan initiative and why such an initiative at this stage of the pilot phase?
The Yukan startup was born in the context of the EC’s Single Market for Green Products initiative, based on the belief that such an initiative is a real opportunity in so far as it provides a unique rigorous and reliable generic method for assessing environmental performance of products so as to enable manufacturers to know, optimize and value their efforts on environmental issues.
Aware of the complexity of the implementation of this generic method without strong LCA expertise (which the Pilot phase has undoubtedly shown), we have created the first digital platform called “Yukan” allowing the practical exploitation of all ‘PEFCR”s by all manufacturers by simply introducing online their own activity data and without the need for any LCA expertise, and thus, to remove all the barriers to the implementation of theses “PEFCR”.
As some of you discovered during a first presentation we held in Brussels last July, the Yukan platform was successfully tested on 8 PEFCRs (in the stage of development they were before the Remodeling), which allowed to demonstrate that it was possible to implement any “PEFCR” within a few days in order to allow any manufacturer to evaluate its products in a few minutes and without expertise. You can watch a demo of the Yukan platform on the following link.
Some members of the TS have already chosen the Yukan platform to test the Remodeling on their own products. Some have asked us to accompany them in this Remodeling step so as to help them to determine their position. For one member of a TS, we have already exploited the excel file provided by one of the “Remodeler” and integrated the new secondary data (available to each TS, as written in the public SC meeting report) and the new model into the Yukan platform. Through this experience, we were able to identify most of the difficulties posed by these files and to overcome them successfully.
We are now ready to do the same for all PEFCRs.
Based on these beliefs and achievements, and because Yukan wants to be one of the first player to make accessible to all stakeholders the “PEFCR” elaborated during the pilot phase, but also the first one to develop new PEFCCR to cover most categories of FMCG products, we naturally and logically want to contribute to the success of the pilot phase and thus provide a concrete answer to the “Remodeling” issue.
We therefore decided to take a strong initiative to accompany manufacturers in this decisive phase of Remodeling by giving them the means to draw the right lessons from it, to determined themselves in a clear way and above all to draw the best benefits from this step so as to optimize their environmental performance.
What is the concrete approach proposed by Yukan to address the issue of Remodeling and what is its purpose and benefits for manufacturers?
The purpose of this initiative is to provide to TS manufacturers members with the additional information they need to carry out their remodeling validation role by providing dynamically, concrete knowledge of the impact of the remodeling on scenarios that reflect their own reality or even their own products.
Through this initiative, manufacturers will access the Yukan digital platform free of charge (and time-limited), to perform a dynamic evaluation of the environmental performance and discover the impact of the remodeling on two products of their choice (if the activity data are available) or for two scenarios prepared by the Yukan team reflecting their reality.
The Yukan digital platform enables indeed this dynamic simulation on real product scenarios and thus helps to better understand the effects of remodeling in order to validate the consolidated model that aim to translate the rules defined in the PEFCR.
More specifically, with the help of the Yukan platform and its team, such original approach will allow you to:
- Know precisely the results on all impact factors of the application of the “Remodeling” on two products of your choice or on scenarios prepared by Yukan’s team that reflects your reality (if you don’t have access to specific activity data).
- Know precisely the impact of the remodeling on the rules defined in their “PEFCR” and in particular the influence of the introduction of new secondary data on the hot spots analysis or on certain defined rules
- Understand the key factors explaining the performance of your two products or the product scenarios prepared by Yukan’s team and above all identify the main optimization levers
- Compare the performance of your products or scenarios with each other and with the results obtained on the Representative product
- Obtaining a comprehensive report describing the detailed results and impacts of the Remodeling on their PEFCR in general and on your own products in particular
Attached is an example of the full and detailed report that we may provide to you as part of this exceptional offer.
Of course, all your activity data (if available) or your hypothesis used for the product scenario as well as the results of the evaluation will be accessible only to you and of course we are committed (on the basis of a non-disclosure agreement) to respect a strict confidentiality on your participation in this offer, on your input data, as well as on the use you will make of it.
Through this major initiative, which represents a very significant investment for Yukan, we want to contribute positively to the successful completion of the pilot phase by the validation of all existing “PEFCRs”.
How can you benefit from this Yukan initiative?
I am therefore pleased to give you today the opportunity to benefit from this exceptional and original offer. Considering the nature of such offer, we have limited it at October 31.
So, if you want to benefit of it, do not wait and let us know your willingness to participate before this date. Upon receipt of the expression of your will, we will give you all the details of setting up this operation.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that as soon as we are not members of all the TSs we will need to have, beside the activity data of your product, the excel files and the LCI data that the “Remodeleurs” have provided to you as TS members.
In order to respect the new timeline sent by the EC the 28 September, we can implement our offer as soon as you send us those files in order to give you all needed information on your product (in particular our report) before the Q&A session foreseen the 23 October (for the TS belonging to the group 1 of the PEF pilot phase) and the 20 November for the TS belonging to the group 2.
Of course, and in accordance with the defined rules, we will only use these files for the sole application of the “Remodeling” exercise.
By this unprecedented offer, we really would be delighted to accompany you in this decisive phase of Remodeling, and by this way, to help you to learn the best lessons and benefits from it.
